When a New Air Conditioner Makes Sense

Sometimes a repair is the right answer and sometimes it is money spent on a system near the end of its life. If your AC is older, uses a phased-out refrigerant or needs a major part like a compressor, a replacement often costs less over the next few years. If you have never had central air, adding it to a home with a forced-air furnace is usually straightforward.

We will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on. If a fix from our AC repair service makes more sense, we will say so.

Installation day is only part of the job. We walk you through the thermostat and filter before we leave, then check back once the system has handled some real summer heat. That follow-up is where small issues get caught early.

What Your AC Installation Includes

A sizing check for your home

We look at square footage, insulation, windows and sun exposure instead of copying the size of the old unit. An oversized AC cycles on and off and leaves rooms clammy. An undersized one runs nonstop on hot days and never catches up.

Coil matched to your furnace

The indoor coil sits on top of your furnace, so the two have to work together. We hold a gas heating mechanical license, which matters when the work happens right at your gas furnace.

Outdoor unit set on a level pad

The condenser goes on a solid, level base with room around it for airflow and future service. We keep it clear of dryer vents and places where snow slides off the roof.

Refrigerant lines and electrical

We run new line sets where needed, pressure test them, pull a vacuum and charge the system to the manufacturer's spec. The electrical disconnect is installed to code.

Removal of the old equipment

If you are replacing a system, we recover the old refrigerant properly and haul the old unit away.

A walkthrough and a check-in

Before we leave, we show you how to set the thermostat, where the filter goes and how often to change it. Then we call a few weeks in to see how it is doing.

Signs It May Be Time for a New AC

  • Repairs keep stacking up

If you have paid for a repair each of the last few summers, those costs add up. We can show you how they compare to a new system.

  • It runs on R-22 refrigerant

Older units often use R-22, which is no longer produced. Recharging one is expensive and only gets harder.

  • Some rooms never cool down

Hot upstairs bedrooms can point to a unit that was never sized right. For rooms the central system cannot reach well, ductless mini-splits are another option.

  • Your power bills keep climbing

An aging compressor works harder for the same cooling. Newer systems use far less electricity to do the same job.

  • You have never had central air

Hot, dry summer evenings can make a home hard to sleep in. If you already have a furnace with vents in each room, adding central air is often simpler than people expect.

How the Job Goes, Start to Finish

  1. 1

    Free in-home estimate

We look at your home, your furnace and where the outdoor unit can go. You get a written quote with the equipment and the work spelled out before anything begins.

  2. 2

    Install day

Most replacements take a day. We lay down floor protection, keep the work area tidy and tell you when the power or the furnace will be off.

  3. 3

    Testing and walkthrough

We check the refrigerant charge, temperatures and airflow at the vents. Then we show you the thermostat and filter and answer your questions.

  4. 4

    Our check-back

Once the system has worked through some hot days, we reach out to ask how it is doing. If something seems off, we come take a look.

What Moves the Price of Your Installation

No two installs are priced the same, because the house, the furnace and the spot for the outdoor unit all differ. We come out first, the estimate costs you nothing, and you see a written quote before anything starts. Here is what changes the number the most.

System size and efficiency
Larger homes need more cooling capacity. Higher efficiency units cost more up front and less to run each summer.
Your existing furnace
If your furnace is in good shape, we match the new coil to it. If it is near the end of its life, replacing both together through our furnace installation service can save a second visit.
Line sets and placement
Reusing sound refrigerant lines keeps costs down. A long run or a tricky path from the coil to the outdoor unit adds labor and material.
Electrical needs
Some homes need a new circuit or an upgraded disconnect for the outdoor unit. We note this on your quote so it is not a surprise.
Choosing a heat pump instead
A heat pump costs more than a basic AC but heats as well as cools. We can help you claim Avista rebates and federal tax credits on heat pumps.

AC Installation Questions

Something not covered here? (509) 769-3613

Do I need a new furnace when I replace my AC?

Not always. If your furnace is working well and has years left, we match the new coil to it. If it is older or struggling, we will explain the tradeoffs of replacing both at once so you can decide.

Is the labor on a new installation covered?

Ask us about the specific equipment you choose and we will go over its coverage. Members of our maintenance plans can extend the labor coverage on their installation, which is one more reason to keep the system tuned up.

How long will I be without cooling?

For most replacements, the old system comes out and the new one is running the same day. We schedule around your day and let you know ahead of time when power to the furnace will be off.

Should I get a heat pump instead of a regular AC?

It depends on how you heat your home now and how you want to heat it later. A heat pump cools like an AC and also handles much of your heating. We will lay out both options side by side on your estimate.

What should I do to take care of my new AC?

Change the filter on the schedule we give you, keep plants and debris a couple of feet away from the outdoor unit and leave the panels closed. A yearly tune-up keeps it running efficiently. We cover all of this in the walkthrough and again when we check back.
